It seems that the exercise message is everywhere and more and more people are receiving the message loud and clear. Yet many on-the-go people simply don't have the time that it sometimes takes to drive to a gym. For this reason, stationary bikes have become popular. Of the many types of such exercise bikes, recumbent stationary bikes are the most popular.
The reasons for the popularity of recumbent stationary bikes is that they are trim and sleek and, in a word, wonderful on the eye, particularly when contrasted with the older models of exercise bikes. These by comparison are drab, stiff, and even almost droll to the eye.
Of course, good looks are only fleeting against the litmus of actual use. Recumbent stationary bikes have a natural advantage over their older siblings in that they are easier on the human body. Another feature on the other end of the spectrum is that they allow the legs to work harder, thus providing a more strenuous workout and effecting better development of muscle tone in the legs and back. Additionally, for paraplegics who haven't the use of their legs but want to exercise their upper bodies, many recumbent stationary bikes can be easily modified to meet these needs.
There is a wide range of recumbent exercise bikes. These include models with or without handles, with different tension settings (an important aspect, especially for older people), and the level of incline. This last aspect is important for sake of leverage. The greater the level of leverage, the higher the possibility of resistance training to strengthen the legs while also toning the muscles.
There are numerous additions that can be purchased, sometimes for only a nominal amount, and sometimes offered as part of the initial price. These include specialty pedals and handlebars, special lumbar chairs to aid the support of sensitive backs, pulse sensors along with LCD monitors to monitor heart rates. Optimal bikes are no more than around 100 pounds and should be able to support a person three times this weight. As well, a warranty should exist of approximately 10 years for the frame itself, and 1 or 2 years for all electronics and additional parts.
