Before Getting Your Recumbent Bicycle Plans

If you've seen a recumbent bike on the road, you've probably realized just how fun they look. Par for a recent wave of bike enthusiasts who build their own bikes of every size, shape, and dimension, this article has been written. So if you've got recumbent bike plans, or if you're thinking about getting some, check this article out first to avoid any mistakes as well as to gain a few pointers.

The first step before even building such a bike is going for a few test rides at your local bike shop. The reason for this is stemmed in the fact that recumbent bikes are so different from other bikes. One of the vastly different aspects is that of balance. When riding a recumbent, you'll quickly feel as though you're learning to ride a bike again for the first time. This is extremely true for the rarest of recumbent models, in which the rider actually rides on their belly, much as in a toboggan.

Further, the reaction point is different, and faster. Thus, an accident can occur much faster than with a conventional bicycle. To illustrate this point, imagine being on a normal bicycle and riding very quickly when suddenly you're thrown from your bike. There is generally enough time to at least throw your hands out to protect yourself. As you scan a set of recumbent bicycle plans, you'll see that by the lessened height of the recumbent, the accident (i.e. your hitting the pavement) will occur much quicker as the distance to the pavement is about half.

Furthermore, again due to the height of a recumbent in relation to the ground, the amount of leaning that one has to do is not the same. Thus reaction time is quickened for turning with a recumbent, which will often shock and even frighten neophytes to this type of bicycle. However, this is not to say that riding these bikes is impossible -quite the contrary; a little practice is called for, though.

After testing a few recumbents, when your confidence and skills have grown, along with a determination as to which model you wish to make, it's time to get some recumbent bicycle plans. These are available for purchase or even for free, many such recumbent bicycle plans being readily available for downloading or printing from the Internet.

However, a word of caution: as with all things, there is little level playing ground with recumbent bicycle plans. This is to say that some of the free online plans may not be up to par, though certainly some are fine. A good source for such plans is Popular Mechanics magazine, along with hobbyist periodicals.
